Step-by-Step Vidhi

1

Shuddhi & Sankalpa

Wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Clean the Puja area. Take a few drops of Gangajal to purify the space. Make a Sankalpa (vow) to observe the Navratri fasts and perform the puja with devotion.

2

Sowing the Barley (Jawariya)

Take the wide earthen pot and spread a layer of clean soil. Evenly spread the Navdhanya or Barley seeds on the soil. Sprinkle some water. This represents the fertile earth and growth of prosperity.

3

Kalash Sthapana

Tie a Moli (sacred thread) around the neck of the copper Kalash. Fill it with Gangajal and pure water. Add a coin, supari, a pinch of turmeric, and Akshat into the water. Place 5 or 7 mango leaves inside the neck of the Kalash so the tips point outwards.

4

Placing the Coconut

Wrap the unpeeled coconut in the red Chunri and tie it securely with Moli. Place the coconut on top of the Kalash, resting on the mango leaves. Ensure the 'face' of the coconut is pointing towards you.

5

Durga Avahan (Invocation)

Place the prepared Kalash in the center of the earthen pot where the seeds are sown. Invoke Goddess Durga (Maa Shailputri on the first day) by chanting her mantras. Request her to reside in the Kalash for the nine days.

6

Daily Panchopachara Puja

Light an Akhand Jyoti (continuous ghee lamp). Offer Chandan, pushpa (flowers), dhoop (incense), deep (lamp), and naivedya (food) daily. Sprinkle a little water on the sown seeds daily to help them sprout into beautiful Jawariya by the 9th day.
